Emmett Activities: Pipecleaner Fun

Pipe Cleaner Fun
I wasn't sure what to call this activity. So, I went with Pipe Cleaner Fun. I found this idea back in March through a link on Pintrest and for the life of me I can not re-find it to make a link. But I did in fact steal this from another mother. We did this activity in April when Emmett was 2 years and 5 months (29 months) I handed Emmett our colander full  of pipe cleaners varying in thickness. I sat with him and showed him how to put the pipe cleaners through the holes. My son is not gifted with fine motor skills. This was a bit of a difficult task for him especially when the pipe cleaners would bend. However, he stuck with it. He worked at this for a good 15 + minutes. He tried very hard to get the pipe cleaners through the wholes. He could get them into the first one but lacked the dexterity to push it all the way across and through a second hole. When he was done pushing the pipe cleaners through the holes, he just explored with pipe cleaners bending them and throwing them. He had a good time. I haven't revisited this activity since April, but plan to later this summer.
Modifications
If I had a colander with larger holes I would have started with that. I plan to find other things with holes for him to practice threading pipe cleaners through. Overall, great fine motor activity. This is also a great conversational activity. We talked about how some of the pipe cleaners where fuzzy and some weren't. We talked about the colors and sizes. I kept using color words and encouraged him to do so as well.
